Potholes that keep returning even after you fill them with fresh gravel signal that mud is pumping up from the subsoil into the base course. Cracks, rutting, or webbed alligator cracking on asphalt show that the underlying rock layer was dug too shallow or never properly compacted. Soft, spongy spots where tires sink in during wet weather indicate poor drainage under the gravel. When these signs appear, topping the surface with more rock is only a temporary patch. Digging out the soft subsoil, laying down woven geotextile fabric, and compacting clean base crushed gravel is the real fix to rebuild a driveway that stays flat and smooth over time.
